Ganga Giri returns to Byron after an incredibly successful 6 month Australian and World Tour !!

World renowned rhythmic didgeridoo virtuoso and world electronic fusion band Ganga Giri (pronounced gun-gah gear-ree) returns to Byron Bay for the first time since the release of his latest Album Good Voodoo back in June 2011. A pumping, percussive, multi-layered experience of complex grooves and raw natural sounds, Ganga Giri’s music is a melting pot of genres and cultures. Ganga mixes an array of tribal percussion (congas, djembe, bougarabou, Nigerian talking drum, mbira) and indigenous flavours (didgeridoo and dance) into a deep earth dance experience – fusing aspects of dub, dancehall, reggae and electro genres.

Ganga Giri have recently returned from an incredibly successful global tour that saw the band tour all across Canada performing at some of the largest blues and roots festivals. The 3 month tour also took in many states of the USA with massive performances at the legendary Burning Man Festival in the Nevada Desert and sold out shows in Hawaii. Off the back of this successful tour Ganga Giri has managed to secure international representation from one of North Americas largest Artists Booking Agencies.

After a short break in Australia, Ganga Giri has been back on the road & the next few months sees the release of a brand new video clip & festivals across Australia & NZ. In keeping with ‘sharing the celebration’ Ganga Giri’s latest album Good Voodoo draws inspiration from all parts of the globe, bringing together a host of collaborators including famed Canadian blues artist Harry Manx, Yeshe Reiners, Gnarnayarrahe Waitare, Deya Dova, Gumaroy Newman and French Guianese vocalist Jornick Joelick .

Ganga says of himself… “I like to bring people together to celebrate. I see myself more now as a producer, and as a producer and community builder, it’s not just about me playing didgeridoo anymore but more about directing a multicultural musical platform. I am inspired to fuse that sound and for it to become absorbable by a really wide audience internationally. “

State of Mind – Wakarusa Festival Review (USA) :
“….the Australian quartet stormed the fields of Wakarusa with their interpretation of ancient cultures. The sound‚ the presence‚ the energy was overwhelming-hands down‚ the highlight of the entire festival.”

Don’t miss Ganga Giri’s original & energising dancefloor mash at Coorabell Hall…a true world-beat celebration !

Wild Marmalade, Byron Bay’s favourite drum ‘n’ didgeridoo dance band have recently completed a tour in New Zealand and featured at Queensland’s Earth Frequency festival and will be returning to their favourite local venue, Coorabell Hall, on Friday March 9 with their non stop organic dance session featuring keyboard player Si Fixion.

Wild Marmalade celebrated a decade of playing shows internationally and throughout Australia with the release their fourth album, “Thermic Lift ” featuring and produced by Si Fixion. Having completed eight tours of Japan and nine of Europe, as well as concerts in USA and Canada, Wild Marmalade have been spreading their unique didgeridoo and drum dance sound to a global audience. Didg player Si Mullumby explains how the collaboration with Si Fixion has its roots set deeply in the Australian dance music scene.

“One of the greatest inspirations behind the creation of Wild Marmalade was seeing The Bird play back in 1999. The way they could win an audience through playing instruments totally live had an energy far greater than what I experienced from listening to pre-recorded dance music. The result is a hybrid between organic and electronic sounds, seamlessly melded to create true Australian groove music. The band is playing totally live, without programming, thus maintaining the essential power of the Wild Marmalade sound”.

The night will also feature long-time local D.J. / producer Andrew Booth playing his mix of organic and electronic grooves.
Expect a night of high energy, organic dance music with ferocious intensity, from Australia’s ambassadors of groove !

“I don’t know which to prefer, the beauty of inflections, or the beauty of innuendoes. The blackbird whistling, or just after.”
— Wallace Stevens

The call and response form of mantra chanting known as Kirtan is a consciousness-transforming practice, directing the singers to vanish into the song as drops merge into the ocean. The form is simple: a lead group calls out the melodies. The crowd responds, clapping and dancing as the rhythms of tablas, finger cymbals, harmonium, tamboura, electric bass, guitar and trumpet build and accelerate into an ecstatic atmosphere of blissful chanting and dancing.

International kirtan artist Dave Stringer will be making his fifth and most extensive Australian tour yet in March 2012.

Stringers sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sensibility of American gospel, and he is regarded as one of the most gifted singers in the genre. Stringer, who is also an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist, has a special ability to bring people together and inspire them to sing. His work intends to create a modern and participatory theatrical experience out of the ancient traditions of kirtan and yoga, open to a multiplicity of interpretations, and accessible to all.

Stringer has been widely profiled as one of the most innovative artists of the new American kirtan movement. The Los Angeles Times has declared the experience of chanting with Dave Stringer to be a departure from ancient kirtan. Stringers performance shaped the experience into a far more compelling musical encounter.Ó

Initially trained as a visual artist, filmmaker and jazz musician, Stringer had his formative experiences with chanting when film editing work brought him to an ashram in Ganeshpuri, India in 1990. An articulate and engaging public speaker, he probes the dilemmas of the spirit with a wry and unorthodox sense of humor.

Bring your friends and family for an enchanting evening of Kirtan at Coorabell Hall, for Dave Stringer’s only Byron Bay Concert. At the very least you will leave full of inspiration and Bhakti bliss !!

This January three of Australia’s most respected and uniquely gifted female performing artists will join together for a series of shows along the east coast. Covering many musical styles including Pop, Folk, Country and Blues, the three woman are sure to bring something for everyone.
The performances are set to be a celebration of original music, friends, fine wine and the art of singing.

Kara Grainger is one of Australia’s most respected live performers. She has an incredibly soulful voice which is easily matched by her ability as a guitar player. She is particularly known for her bottleneck guitar and her effortlessly seductive take on blues and roots music. Over the past 5 years Kara has been residing and touring in the USA, she has completed two CD’s and opened for many legendary performers such as Buddy Guy, Peter Frampton, and Heart, to name a few. This year Kara completed her first ever European tour which saw her visiting 7 countries. It was a huge success and promises to be the first of many more.

Corinne Gibbons was born and raised in the small country town of Bega and has gone from strength to strength since performing at the tender age of 17. She continues to perform around the world from Japan to India, New York, LA and Europe. Her CD “MELT” received two awards at the World Wildlife Film Festival in the US for Best Music and Nature video, in both North Virginia and the Hamptons. She also took out 2 awards last year at the Summer Solstice Festival in Stonehenge, Best Album and a Peace award for her contribution to the planet through MELT. Corinne’s music shares intimate stories of the experiences she has faced in her life, her well-travelled journeys around the globe and the insights gained from her life in Singapore where she now resides.

Chris E Thomas is an amazingly gifted vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. Since moving from Tasmania, also at the age of 17 Chris E has become recognized as one of Australia’s finest session singers. Billy Thorpe, Tina Arena, Brian Cadd , Bachelor Girl, Vanessa Amorosi and Adam Brand are just a few of the well respected Australian artists to draw upon her talents. Rock Legend Brian Cadd recently rated her amongst the best female vocalists he’s encountered during his illustrious career. “Her power and passion are what music should be all about,” he says. Her new single ‘Workin’, is set to be released into the country music realm in December 2011, followed by the full length album in January 2012.

We are incredibly lucky to have these three amazingly talented women performing together …a rare opportunity to experience three truly unique performers in an acoustic and intimate setting !!

Packed with personality and harmony, this is one event not to be missed !

What can one say…in retrospect it’s obvious that horror and country music go together like peas and carrots – it just took Graveyard Train to show us. Utilising old timey instruments (banjo, dobro & washboard) with the unorthodox percussion of hammer & chain, all underneath a six part baritone ‘manchoir’ vocal delivery, Graveyard Train have created a unique sound and an equally unique way to deliver it. Exclusively singing songs and stories about death, despair, vampires, werewolves and anything macabre, Graveyard Train have drawn on the storytelling styles of old folk songs and mashed it with a punk/rockabilly/country frenetic foot stomping energy to create ‘Horror Country’.

Graveyard Train have toured solidly since day one and over the past 3 years they’ve risen immensely in popularity – the crowds are massing in cities, towns and festivals across the country. 2010 saw the band release their critically acclaimed 2nd album, The Drink The Devil & The Dance. Recorded straight to tape in a big old haunted hall in the tiny Victorian country town of Wandilligong, Graveyard Train have expanded their horror country horizons, bringing in mariachi horns, strings and other assorted guest instrumentalists to add to the chaos. The album received critical acclaim, and was voted PBS 106.7FM’s No 1 Album of 2010.
They immediately took off for an incredibly successful tour of the UK and Europe, followed by a national tour which included festivals such as Falls, Golden Plains, WaveRock, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the Blue Mountains Folk Festival.

Their foot stomping, chain smashing, hell raising antics seem to be something everyone in the world can relate to!

It’s a genius concept really: Graveyard Train have twisted folk, blues, roots, bluegrass and murder ballads into something quite original and immensely entertaining. Death and violence have never been so uproarious. René Schaefer, Mess + Noise

Daniel Champagne has been recently described as ‘the most talked-about rising star of Australia’s next generation’ & he delivers one of the most impressive one-man-shows out there…revered as an absolute must see ! His jazzy finger picking, signature explosion of 2-hand tapping, body percussion and fiery runs in a swag of different tunings can be expected.
Reaching to musical depth’s far beyond his years and a way with the guitar that can only be seen to be believed. Champagne often sounds closer to a three-piece band than the 21 year old singer songwriter guitarist now established as a renowned performer on both the Australian and international stage.

Maniacal * Brilliant * Belligerent * Legendary

Comprehensively in your face. Like a Muppet with a real bad attitude. These are just some of the words used to describe the utterly intoxicating Juke Baritone as he’s been travelling the world with his rascally troupe of manic noise-makers, assaulting audiences with his tall tales of bad love, good times and the evils of the world. Accordions wail. Horns scream. Guitars screech. And the room goes wild as they dance and chant along to this uniquely Australian sounding psycholonial stomp. It’s certifiably, incurably insane and it sounds bloody marvellous !!

If you can think about Tom Waits and Cab Calloway drinking themselves into a stupor before moving to New Orleans and forming a punk band then you might be getting close to a hint of what Juke Baritone & The Swamp Dogs sound like. It is impossible to pigeon hole. Gypsy, jazz, rock, dub, punk, folk, reggae, blues and everything in between are mashed together into a completely unique and original sound.

Festival regulars at home in Australia, they have played in The Spiegeltent at Sydney and Melbourne Festivals, The Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Fringe Festival along with the National Gallery Victoria, Art Gallery NSW, Woodford Folk Festival, The Harvest Festival, Peats Ridge, Corinbank Festival and many more.

A recently completed tour of the UK and Europe saw Juke win over fans from London to Slovakia and back again with his criminally insane and larger than life stage presence…punters were screaming Juke Baritone lyrics at the top of their voices and streaming from venues and festivals gushing that Baritone alone was worth every penny of their admission price. “Those crazy Australians!”

Completely at home on the cabaret circuit, in the circus, busking on the streets or roving around at festivals, Juke is never shy of an opportunity to bring some music or make the party. Whether solo or with a band, acoustic or electric, he can sing and dance and scream his way into the hearts and pockets of the unsuspecting public.

“…unlike other acts riding on the revival of all things vaudeville and cabaret, Baritone certainly holds his own.” Beat Magazine

“…the Spiegeltent favourite careens from drunken Romany ringmaster to incensed back-alley street-preacher to lecherous, crazed hobo.” Rave Magazine

“Tom Waits has got nothing on these guys!” dB Magazine

Internationally recognized for his musical abilities in performing the ancient art form of Kirtan & Bhajan, Vaiyasaki Das provides a rare opportunity to experience a taste of authentic devotional music from the Vedic tradition.

Some spiritual truths cannot be conveyed in words—but are carried instantly to the soul when experienced directly through music. Vaiyasaki Das, a tenor and international kirtaniya, travels the world transforming hearts by the chanting of the Divine Names of God. His kirtan music features inspirational sacred music gathered from many Kirtan traditions from India and Bangladesh.

Vaiyasaki, an initiated disciple of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, spent many years in India and Bangladesh since the 1970′s learning the ragas inherent to the various kirtan styles from master kirtan musicians, saints, and singers who inspire whole villages in Bangladesh to join in the ecstatic chanting of the spiritual celebration of kirtan. Since the 70′s he has toured introducing raga kirtan and devotional Bengali music in 5 continents, recorded 12 CDs, and written two books how the kirtan/yoga culture was transplanted to the West.

Today Vaiyasaki Das is a much sought-after performer, conducting workshops, performing in concerts and leading yoga festivals and retreats worldwide. His considerable knowledge of the vast repertoire of Indian bhajans has provided the foundation for a new generation of artists, in the flourishing genre of kirtan yoga and mantra meditation.

Sharing his heart through music and chanting is the basis of his life. Each of his musical recordings is intended as an offering from the heart.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see an international Kirtan master, at the intimate Coorabell Hall !!

“In today’s world of ‘McYoga’ and ‘pop kirtan,’ Vaiyasaki’s bhajans & kirtan are welcome relief for those who are serious about the vibrational and devotional qualities of classical sankirtan. When I listen to Vaiyasaki, I feel connected to India’s spiritual roots and her Bhakti Yoga traditions. These bhajans uplift the spirit, refresh the soul, like a trip to Vrindaban, without the jet lag.” -Rev. Prem Anjali, Ph.D. Editor, Integral Yoga Magazine

*FLAMENCO SONG & DANCE DIRECT FROM SPAIN*

The Gypsy Caravana are making a brief visit to Australia and we are blessed to have them perform for us at the beautiful Mullum Drill Hall. They will be performing for us a unique fusion of pure flamenco dance and song, which is a collaboration of the lead singer and guitarist from the famous Andalusian folk fusion flamenco band, (Los Delinquentes) with Deya Miranda Giner (Flamenco Dancer) and Belén Gutierrez Rodriguez (Palmas).

Gypsy Caravana is an authentic flamenco group composed of these 4 members. They are all from Spain, Jerez de la Frontera, birth place of this mysterious art…

Deya Miranda Giner (Flamenco Dancer): Australian born, but of Spanish background, from the south of Spain. She first began to dance flamenco in 1992, at the age of 16, in Spain, (Menorca) with master dancer Paqui Ferrer. From this early age she has continued to study Flamenco in Australia and Spain under the tutelage of many master teachers and has performed worldwide in various Flamenco groups. Deya now resides in Jerez, (birth place of flamenco art and dance).

Paco Lara (Guitarist): At the age of 9, Paco started to study the guitar .He first debuted as a professional guitarist when he was 15 year’s old and has accompanied many very important singers over the years. He has also taken part in a number of flamenco rock tours with two of Spain’s leading bands, El Bario and The Delinqüentes.

Maros del Ojo (Guitarist / Singer):” El Canijo de Jerez”, is the vocalist, guitarist and composer of the famous flamenco- rock band Los Delinqüentes. At the young age of 15 he formed the band Los Delinqüentes, which is one of Spain’s most successful bands of this last decade. The Delinqüentes have shared stage with Spain’s best artists .

Together, Deya, Paco Lara, Maros Del Ojo and Ana Belen are The Gypsy Caravana. They will be performing three dances… Alegrias, Seguirilla, Tangos populares and to finish, Bulerias de Jerez,. The Delincüentes will perform a song after each dance act and Paco the guitarist will do a flamenco guitar solo. So ladies and gentleman we are in for a treat…

Don’t miss this exciting and rare opportunity to see some of the finest Flamenco performers direct from Spain, performing at the beautiful Mullum Drill Hall !!

Rapskallion shall once again be taking to the eastern road this summer, pedaling their new 5 track E.P “The Cat and Fiddle” from Melbourne town to Brisvegas in a blaze of sweat, colour, feathers and accordion powered riffage.

The Skallions have entertained audiences worldwide for over half a decade, with their unique concoction of vaudevillian, cabaret, junkyard gypsy blues. Reminiscent of 20′s Paris Bohemia transported to a Romanian tavern and then set adrift on the high seas. Their original blend of music is strongly influenced by the music of Eastern Europe, Greece, France and Spain as well as hip hop and hobo jazz.

Their new EP Cat and Fiddle is a collection of musical vignettes from a realm inhabited by back alley gangster felines, femme fatales, and silver moon maidens, with a soundtrack somewhere between a Chicago speakeasy, a Hungarian hoedown, and a Halloween party at a south seas pirate haven.

The buccaneers gone electric have extracted these five songs from their upcoming full length release, “Vagabond King”, which will be available on vinyl and CD in March 2012.

“The Cat and Fiddle” will be released on the 25th November and available through rapsakllion.com.au and Rapskallion shows.

Special guest Ivy Lucille is a theatrical singer songwriter with a heartfelt passion for life. In the last few years Ivy has developed her act into a unique, new age style of cabaret, which incorporates crazed songs from the darker depths of the psyche, to light comedy with a burlesque flare. Ivy is known for captivating her audiences with her ever changing performance!

So come hell or high water, Rapskallion shall be exploding onto the stage at Coorabell Hall, set for a special night of dance and entertainment. Roll up, roll up! Come along and be seduced by their brand new infectious dance tunes from The Cat and Fiddle.
