audiences through his guitar. He’s always at the service
of his inner voice, which has a sneaky way of connecting
directly to the listener’s heart.”

Creative Loafing Magazine, Tampa Bay FL

Once touted as one of the strangest men in acoustic music by Spectrum Magazine, fingerstyle guitarist Richard Gilewitz lives up to this depiction with his rousing performances filled with amazing chops, humour, and a history of the acoustic guitar from blues to folk, traditional to classical and somewhere in between. Much of the charm of a Gilewitz performance is in the stories he tells.
His use of banjo style picking patterns, classical arpeggios, tapping and harmonics, as well as a rhythmic and percussive approach, bring a fresh impression to the listener. According to 20th Century Guitar Magazine, “A powerhouse of eclectic guitar styles and genres, Gilewitz wears his influences well.”

Richard welcomed the challenge of mastering and adapting many styles of music for the acoustic guitar — a trait that continually places him among a multitude of genres.

Richard began honing his skills both as a performer and composer during the late 1970’s, playing the local coffee house circuit while pursing degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, and MusicSoon . The pull of his passion for performing and recording was so compelling that Richard left corporate life to teach and perform full time in a career that has propelled him across countless countries worldwide.

Richard has now released 7 LP recordings. Today, acknowledged as one of the most unique and humorous performers on the contemporary acoustic scene, he is respected worldwide for his command of the 6 and 12-string guitar. He continues to work on his craft under the direction of classical guitarist David Walbert. Whether playing solo, conducting guitar seminars and school programs, or sharing the stage with fellow performers, Richard Gilewitz always creates a sparkle of mood mastery and wonderment.

Richard has appeared in concert with many highly esteemed The California Guitar Trio , Kenny G, The Little River Band, Taj Mahal, John Hammond, The Indigo Girls, Loudon Wainwright III and Lucinda Williams .

At the age of 22, singer-songwriter and gun-guitarist Daniel Champagne has already lived the life of many a musician more than twice his age. One of his earliest memories is of watching his singer-songwriter and guitar playing father rehearse with his band in their country backyard. This led the 4 year old to take up his instrument of choice a year later, training classically through his teenage years. He started to write his own songs at 12, performing at local events and festivals. At 18, Daniel left school, turned professional and hit the road.

Having cut his teeth on the Australian and international music scene with 2 independent EPs, ‘My Own Design (2009) and ‘Wide Eyed and Open’ (2010), full length album ‘Pint of Mystery’ (2011) and many hundreds of live shows, the hard work and constant performing has paid off, with Daniel reaching a level of musicianship far beyond his young age.

His phenomenal guitar abilities often make him sound more like a three-piece band than a solo performer, pushing the instrument to beyond its boundaries, and Daniel’s now signature explosion of 2-hand tapping, body percussion and fiery runs in a variety of different tunings, alongside sublime jazzy finger picking and tasteful improvisation have become hallmarks of his impressive live shows. Reaching into Folk, Blues, Classical, Jazz and other stylings, Daniel delivers crowd-pleasing sets that include powerful foot-stomping numbers, experimental compositions, bags of originals through to century-old Folk and Blues Songs.

Having shared stages with some of the finest acts here and internationally has seen Daniel gain a deserved reputation for dropping jaws, breaking guitars and making audiences buzz wherever he goes.
This last year has seen Daniel performing hundreds of shows internationally in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand and here in Australia. Daniel is now heading out on the road again, touring nationally from April to June to support his latest release ‘Real Live’. This new release captures the energy and spirited atmosphere of Daniel’s ‘show-stopping’ live performance, honed over more than four years on the road. ‘Real Live’ contains a collection of new songs, new versions of old songs and a couple of covers Daniel has been carrying around since first setting out on tour at age 18.

Don’t miss this exceptional master pianist and musician from LULO REINHARDT’S band at the intimate Harvest Café !

Sean Mackenzie began playing the piano at the age of 9, by 11 he was performing his original works in competitions and by 15 had started performing professionally with jazz and rock bands. Since graduating from Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 1987 he has travelled widely composing, performing and teaching.

With influences from all corners of the world, Seanʼs music travels from one hemisphere to another and back again. The beauty of Sean Mackenzieʼs music is its undulating melodies, profound harmonies and creative improvisation. Sean finds inspiration in the music of Brazil, Latin Americas, Africa, Asia and the European Gypsies. He developed a unique understanding and sound with music, making him one of the exceptional musicians and composers of our time.
Multi instrumentalist, composer and producer Sean Mackenzie is an eccentric wizard on a worldwide journey through music. His explorations into less conventional, indigenous sounds have seen him specialize in piano, the exquisite thumb piano (Kalimba) of Africa, and the beautiful Brazilian instruments of berimbau and pandeiro.
Sean has composed and produced music for Nikatsu Film Studios in Japan, Lulo Reinhardt as well as his own albums Talking to Myselves, Off 2 C the Planet, Brasil & Couch Invaders. He has been invloved in intensive workshops in Holland and Brazil.
Sean currently tours with Lulo Reinhardt & his own band & is endorsed by Korg.

Album review for “Brasil” – 4 stars
Sydney Morning Herald by John Shand
Mackenzie is a master storyteller. Every piano solo is a deftly shaped little narrative that unfolds compellingly from one note to the next. Those who have been enthralled by his work as foil to guitarist Lulo Reinhardt should enjoy Mackenzieʼs own music, here consisting of nine Brazilian-flavoured originals.

Taken from a review of a Lulo Reinhardt Concert by Lloyd Bradford Syke
“Besides Lulo, there were three compelling reasons for this: Sydney-sourced pianist (well, multi-instrumentalist, truthfully) Sean Mackenzie probably foremost among them. Mackenzie is so dazzling, he rivals Lulo for TKO performance. The constantly competitive, good-natured playoff, between the two, is nothing short of scintillating; a thrill a minute, as they push themselves and each other into new territory and to ever more dizzying new heights.“

After a five-year break to raise her son, Bic Runga, one of New Zealand’s most iconic musicians, returns with a new album ‘Belle’ and an east-coast Australian tour beginning May 1.

With her first two albums each selling 11 times platinum in her home country, top ten hits in Australia, Japan and Ireland and critical success in the UK, Bic Runga is one of the highest selling artists in New Zealand music history.

‘Belle’ was produced by Kody Nielson and mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend), Tom Rothrock (Beck, James Blunt, Foo Fighters) and Nielson. Bic and her band, including Mint Chicks Kody Nielson and Michael Logie, will play shows in the UK and Ireland prior to her Oz tour.

The five years since her last album of new material have passed quickly, at least for Bic. You could say life intervened – specifically the birth in 2007 of her son. “Motherhood is very nice. But there comes a point where it would be really easy to lose your identity, and if you didn’t return to your art you’d just become a pain to everyone around you.”

The constraints of parenthood necessitated a new approach to her work, so she tried something she had never seriously contemplated before – and it led to an artistic rebirth. Bic embarked on a series of collaborations, including a co-write with Dan Hume of Evermore which resulted in the uplifting first single ‘Hello Hello.’ This single was the #1 most added song to radio in the week of release in New Zealand. It debuted on Australian radio February 27.

Since her first single ‘Drive’ in 1996, a massive hit when she was just twenty, Bic has been awarded almost every musical honour in NZ, including the APRA Silver Scroll Songwriting Award, a collection of Tui’s and multi-platinum discs. Her debut album ‘Drive’ (1997) went platinum seven times in New Zealand and went gold in Australia; ‘Beautiful Collision’ followed in 2002 (eleven times platinum) and ‘Birds’ in 2005 (triple platinum). She has shared stages with Neil and Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn, members of Radiohead and Wilco. Her songs have featured in hit film soundtracks (American Pie), her records have been released around the world, and she has won followings in Europe, Asia and North America. In January 2006, HM Queen Elizabeth II made Runga a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the NZ New Year’s Honours List.

Wild Marmalade, Byron Bay’s favourite drum ‘n’ didgeridoo dance band have recently completed a tour in New Zealand and featured at Queensland’s Earth Frequency festival and will be returning to their favourite local venue, Coorabell Hall, on Friday March 9 with their non stop organic dance session featuring keyboard player Si Fixion.

Wild Marmalade celebrated a decade of playing shows internationally and throughout Australia with the release their fourth album, “Thermic Lift ” featuring and produced by Si Fixion. Having completed eight tours of Japan and nine of Europe, as well as concerts in USA and Canada, Wild Marmalade have been spreading their unique didgeridoo and drum dance sound to a global audience. Didg player Si Mullumby explains how the collaboration with Si Fixion has its roots set deeply in the Australian dance music scene.

“One of the greatest inspirations behind the creation of Wild Marmalade was seeing The Bird play back in 1999. The way they could win an audience through playing instruments totally live had an energy far greater than what I experienced from listening to pre-recorded dance music. The result is a hybrid between organic and electronic sounds, seamlessly melded to create true Australian groove music. The band is playing totally live, without programming, thus maintaining the essential power of the Wild Marmalade sound”.

The night will also feature long-time local D.J. / producer Andrew Booth playing his mix of organic and electronic grooves.
Expect a night of high energy, organic dance music with ferocious intensity, from Australia’s ambassadors of groove !

“I don’t know which to prefer, the beauty of inflections, or the beauty of innuendoes. The blackbird whistling, or just after.”
— Wallace Stevens

The call and response form of mantra chanting known as Kirtan is a consciousness-transforming practice, directing the singers to vanish into the song as drops merge into the ocean. The form is simple: a lead group calls out the melodies. The crowd responds, clapping and dancing as the rhythms of tablas, finger cymbals, harmonium, tamboura, electric bass, guitar and trumpet build and accelerate into an ecstatic atmosphere of blissful chanting and dancing.

International kirtan artist Dave Stringer will be making his fifth and most extensive Australian tour yet in March 2012.

Stringers sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sensibility of American gospel, and he is regarded as one of the most gifted singers in the genre. Stringer, who is also an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist, has a special ability to bring people together and inspire them to sing. His work intends to create a modern and participatory theatrical experience out of the ancient traditions of kirtan and yoga, open to a multiplicity of interpretations, and accessible to all.

Stringer has been widely profiled as one of the most innovative artists of the new American kirtan movement. The Los Angeles Times has declared the experience of chanting with Dave Stringer to be a departure from ancient kirtan. Stringers performance shaped the experience into a far more compelling musical encounter.Ó

Initially trained as a visual artist, filmmaker and jazz musician, Stringer had his formative experiences with chanting when film editing work brought him to an ashram in Ganeshpuri, India in 1990. An articulate and engaging public speaker, he probes the dilemmas of the spirit with a wry and unorthodox sense of humor.

Bring your friends and family for an enchanting evening of Kirtan at Coorabell Hall, for Dave Stringer’s only Byron Bay Concert. At the very least you will leave full of inspiration and Bhakti bliss !!
